Higher Education in Poland
Poland is the first country in the world to have formed Ministry of
Education dated as early as 1773 and was the first of its kind in the
history of humankind.
Higher education in Poland started in the middle ages. In 1364 the-first
Polish university was created at Jagiellonian in Cracow. In 1826 the
first technical university was established in Warsaw, which is now the
largest technical university in Poland. Polish students have studied in
university since the fourteenth century.
Many higher education institutions were established after World War II.
At the end of communism (1989), there were 820 institutions in Poland,
about 20 of them being engineering oriented. In the 1990s a two-tier
system was reinstituted. The fist tier was considered to be vocational
rather than academic. The two-tier system was instituted in Poland well
before it was suggested by the Bologna Declaration
After 1989 higher education in Poland changed dramatically. Borders
were opened for free mobility, autonomy of universities in curricula and
management. New laws concerning higher education, convertible Polish
currency, easy communication, (telephone and Internet), and access to
European education and research programs made higher education more
accessible.
There are approximately 500 Universities and School
of Higher Education in Poland. Many of them offer Graduate and Post
Graduate studies in English Language.
Recognition of Degree
Polish
diplomas are recognized under international agreements on the
recognition of equivalency of education documents or, in cases
of countries with which no such agreements have been signed,
under these countries’ provisions on the recognition of foreign
diplomas.
